Sydney Uni finished the meet with 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals, and 14 final swims. All 11 swimmers swam personal best times during the meet. Our swimmers also proudly represented their area in the relays with great results.

Saturday 5 March and Sunday 6 March saw 7 Sydney University Swimmers competing for the first time at the SNSW National Qualifying Meet. The swimmers were competing against themselves, aiming for personal bests that would bring them below the National Age qualifying times. Huon Fairbairn was after a qualifying time for the 13 years 200m butterfly. He needed to knock over 3 seconds off his PB of 2:34.04 to qualify. Lining up at his first attempt in the morning, he worked hard and knocked a second off his PB. He lined up again in the afternoon and succeeded in a spectacular fashion achieving a PB of 2:30.17, inside the 2:31.00 qualifying time. Great job Huon! Sarah Hilt, one of the newest members of the club, attempted her first official qualifying times for backstroke. Having recently been taught backstroke by new coach Vanessa Smith, she swam her first backstroke race at our last club night. Unfortunately, with no referee, she could not use the times. However, at the National Qualifying meet she managed to secure a National MC qualifying time of 1:09.10 for the 50m backstroke. Well done Sarah!
Angelique Barrett had two attempts at getting a qualifying time for 100m butterfly and the 50m free. On both occasions she went under her previous PB for the 100m butterfly, but narrowly missed out by 2 tenths of a second on getting the needed time. With a new PB of 1:09.50, Angelique needs 1:09.30 to join the others in Adelaide. On the Sunday, Angelique was back to try for a 50m freestyle qualifying time. On both occasions she beat her previous mark and went under the elusive 30 seconds. She needs to take off .65 of a second to get there. She has one more chance at our next club night. Good luck Angelique. Cecilia Mafi, Dot or Dorothy to everyone, burned up the pool in the 50m freestyle on both days, trying to make the 29.00 required. On both occasions she managed to break the 30 second mark with two new PBs, and narrowly missed out with a final PB of 29.24 seconds – only .24 seconds to go. Dot has one more chance out our club night on 19 March. We’ll be cheering for you!
Tom Stirk, pushed and pulled hard for a 100m breastroke time. On his first attempt, he matched his existing PB of 1:16.95. On his second attempt, he bettered his PB and achieved a 1:16.08. He needs a 1:15.20, which he shall be aiming for at our next club night. We have our fingers crossed for you! Inez Osland must be exhausted after her efforts in the 50m freestyle and the 100m freestyle. She made 4 attempts to try and make the 28.50 second qualifying time, but was just outside her previous PB of 29.50 seconds. With the 50m freestyle, you only have to take one breath too many or miss that extra metre in the streamline to miss out. Come on Inez. We will be supporting you at Club night. Finally, Paige Burland, who already has a National Age qualifying time, participated in the 50m freestyle, the 100m backstroke and the 200m backstroke. With a new PB of 29.45 in the 50 m freestyle, she also needs to drop less than ½ a second to qualify. Her two swims in the 100m backstroke saw her beating the National Age qualifying time of 1:11.50 both times with a 1:11.10 and 1:09.16. While she has already qualified for this event, it was good to see her consistently beating the qualifying time. Paige backed it up in the 200m backstroke where for the first time in competition she went below 2:30.00 with a 2.29.91, well inside the qualifying time of 2.33.00. That’s two events that she’ll be competing it at the National Age in Adelaide. Congratulations Paige! A special thanks to their coach Vanessa Smith for supporting the swimmers over the weekend and preparing them so well for the sessions. She provided them with valuable feedback on their swims, which will be put to good use at our next club night. Thank you also to their parents and supporters who travelled out to SOPAC to cheer them on. STOP PRESS: Tom, Angel, Inez and Dot all qualified at the next swim club night. |

The Club congratulates all members on their fantastic school swimming achievements! The Coaches and Committee have been blown away by the fantastic success of club swim members at their school swimming events. There are too many to mention as so many members were age champions, represented their school at their “area/cluster/zone” meets and their area at regional meets. Well done every one of you! Special mention to Lewis Blackburn and Imogen Brent who will compete at PSSA in 11 years 50m back and 50m fly respectively, and Nathan McMurray who will compete at CHSA in the 200m and 400m freestyle. CIS High School will see Joe Howe compete in the 50m breaststroke and Angelique Barrett in the 50m fly and school relay. CCC will host Inez Osland, Huon Fairbairn, Dorothy Mafi, Taylor Burland, Alecia Garrett and Paige Burland. We will have to wait to hear if they make it to the state. All swimmers will be competing for a spot on the NSW Team to compete at National Schools. |

Wow! What an action packed and rewarding summer season everyone has had from the youngest club members who are mastering or have mastered the 25m events, through the squad levels as each swimmer develops, up to the hardened veterans of the High Performance Squad. We’ve seen our club grow through word of mouth, ‘learn to swimmers’ making the leap into club swimming and some new faces starting their University careers as part of the Elite Athlete program. While the National Open and Age swimmers and the school state swimmers are still slogging it out, all of us can look forward to celebrating the end of a very successful summer swimming season. Sydney Uni Swim Club will be hosting the annual end of summer season BBQ in a new location and at a new time this year. We’ve decided to forgo the joys of diving into the cold ocean in May and braving the winds at North Bondi, by indulging in an afternoon of games, fun and food at Sydney Park near the brickworks on Saturday May 7th from 3.00 pm until 5.00ish. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided by the club. Come along and enjoy a chlorine free opportunity with other club members. Stay tuned for further updates on the nitty gritty details |

Saturday 18th December saw seventeen swimmers and two (wonderful) coaches Vanessa and Tegan embark on a Swim Camp at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern. The 3 day camp was aimed at being a team building exercise and an extra step in preparation for the State Championships in January. After a quick morning tea and the excitement of room allocation, touch footy and basketball were the first activities on the cards. Some people shone through, showing off their skills on the court, while others, it is safe to say, are lucky they are good at swimming! Most importantly, everyone had a go, and everyone really worked well with each other. It was great to see the older swimmers helping the younger swimmers. On Saturday afternoon, Jono Newton, one of the Open swimmers, came to speak about the importance of balancing swimming and school. The first swimming session came that afternoon, and after a busy day, the swimmers managed to put in a solid effort. We thought dinner and bed wouldn’t be a struggle after the fun-filled day the swimmers had, but the excitement of bunking in with friends seemed to overcome any tiredness. 2.00am saw the end of the chattering and games of truth and dare and the blossoming club romances as Sunday was only going to be busier!
On Sunday morning, Matt Jaukovic, came to give a presentation on his experiences in swimming. The first pool session was then dedicated to Matt teaching relay change overs and the swimmers gained a wealth of knowledge from Matt who has experience training for relays with Australian swim teams. After lunch, the kids were challenged to another team bonding exercise with a running relay on the treadmills in the gym. Lewis Blackburn and Huon Fairbairn were the winning team, but everyone pushed themselves and supported their team members extremely well. It was great to see such a high level of commitment and hard work from the young swimmers. On Sunday afternoon, head coach Bobby came to help out at the swimming session and worked with the backstrokers. After a big dinner, bowls of ice-cream, continued club romances and more games of truth and dare, it was time for bed.
On Monday morning we woke to a cold and windy day, however, everyone managed to get in the pool with only a short spurt of whinging about the less than ideal conditions to be swimming in an outdoor pool! The session was completed well and it was a race back to the rooms to see who could get into the warm showers first! After a big breakfast, parents came to pick up their tired, yet happy children who had a busy weekend. We are pleased to say the camp was a success in both regards, with stronger friendships being formed and hard work being slogged out in the pool. Thanks to parent volunteers David Blackburn and Paul Barrett and to the Club for supporting the camp and hopefully the club will be able to provide a bigger and better swim camp again soon! |
