Membership Handbook 2010

SUSC is a swimming club that encourages its members to compete. This involvement can be at Club, State and National level.

SUSC encourages all members to enjoy swimming as a sport and to enjoy being part of a successful and happy team of dedicated athletes.

SUSC caters for all ages starting from five years and up competing at Club, State, National and International levels.

The aim of the senior program, is to give Australian athletes the chance to continue their sporting pursuits (while getting an education), to provide the right balance in life, now and for the future.

ORIGINS
Sydney University Swimming Club (SUSC) began in 1998 and was established by Brian Sutton (Olympic Coach). Sydney University Swim Club runs under the umbrella of Sydney University Sport and trains out of Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre.
In 2000 SUSC was awarded Australian Club of the Year, under the guidance of Brain Sutton. SUSC has had numerous Olympian swimmers and Australian Champion including Life Members Elka Graham, Chris Fylder, Brett Hawke, Scott Millar, Phil Rogers, Mathew Dunn, David Cater, and Michelle Englesman. Currently SUSC has world record holder Matt Jaukovic (50m Fly SC), and Australian Champion Matt Abood representing the club.
In 2009 the SUSC senior program coach (Steve Alderman) was awarded Australian Swim Coach of the Year and the Chairperson of the club (Christine Etter) was awarded Australian Swim Club Administrator of the Year.
In 2009 SUSC was again awarded Australian Club of the Year and under the talented coaching staff of Steve Alderman and Vanessa Smith continue to develop a swim team of considerable talent and depth.
The objectives of Our Club are:
• To provide an effective support framework to maximise the development pathway from beginners to elite swimmers and coaches, and encourage our members to stay involved in our sport for the collective and mutual benefit of members and swimming;
• To encourage sportsmanship in competitive swimming and promote performance-enhancing drug free swimming;
• To provide leadership, effective and efficient and professional administration and management ensuring continued growth of Sydney University Swimming Club;
• To enhance fellowship and camaraderie among Club members by providing social activities for members;
• To affiliate to the New South Wales Swimming Association and to abide by the Member Protection Policy and Child Protection and Intervention policy of Australian Swimming (SAL), (as amended from time to time). Affiliation to other kindred bodies may be effected from time to time by the Committee;
• To ensure communication at all levels to enable optimal outcomes and at all times to act on behalf of, in the interests of, and in conjunction, with the Members.
 
MEMBERSHIP ENTITLEMENTS AND CLUB ACTIVITIES
Membership is open to swimmers from 5 years of age.
SUSC 2009 – 2010 Season fees are:-
► $70 for swimmers
► $20 for non-swimmers (parents/guardians)
Fee includes insurance for members and registration with NSW Swimming (capitation) of $36.50, and if applicable junior registration with GO CLUB, (Australian Swimming).
Membership covers the swimming year from the 1st October to 30th September.
(Note: membership fees may be altered from time to time in alignment with NSW Swimming Registration Fees)
Each member is issued with a NSW Swimming card and registration number which is to be quoted on all carnival entries.
SUSC is affiliated with St George/Sutherland Swimming Association and SUSC membership includes registration with Swimming NSW and by affiliation, Swimming Australia. Membership enables the Swimmer to compete in District/Area and Swimming NSW approved events/competitions, in addition to SUSC run activities.

► Go Club: is Swimming Australia's club development program. Developed in conjunction with ASCTA for the delivery of club development services to swimming clubs and a Go Club Registration Pack is provided to all new SUSC members.
► Club Championships: SUSC holds one club championships yearly, (September). All SUSC members are welcome to compete at this carnivals.
► Club Nights are held every 2 months on a Saturday afternoon 3.00-6.00pm with a social function afterwards. See notice board for brochure or check out the events calendar for schedule
► Club & Sydney University Sport ‘Fun/Race’ Night: is generally held the first Friday night of each month. Warm up is at 4:30pm and the event commences at 5:00pm sharp.

► Club Awards:
At the end of the year SUSC holds a presentation day and all members are eligible for club awards.
► Speedo Shop:
As a SUSC member you are entitled to receive 10% discount at the Speedo Shop (Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre).
► Club Social activities:
• Club Social dinner is held first Friday of each month following fun night activities;
• End of Season Beach BBQ with Race the Coach Competition
• Annual Christmas Party for members and family;
• Club excursions and other fun activities

► Stroke Clinics and Training Camps:
Intensive Stroke Clinics and week long Training Camps are held annually with the involvement of experienced high profile swimmers and coaches. Emphasis is on advanced stroke correction and race specific skills.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
1. All swimmers must be a financial member of Sydney University Swimming Club.
2. Trophies are awarded at the end of the year to the Club Champions of each individual age group and will be presented at the Club Annual Presentation Day in October of each year..
3. Medals will be awarded on the Club Championship day for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each individual age group.
4. The program will consist of Individual Age and Open levels in distance and strokes. Ages will be from seven (7) and under to seventeen (17+) years in each stroke.
5. Age will be at the date of the Club Championship
6. A swimmer must compete in all strokes (Freestyle, Butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke) to be eligible for Club Champion.
7. A swimmer must have attended and swam at 8 race/club nights to be eligible for Club Champion.
8. The swimmer with the most points will be the Club Champion in each age group.
9. Points are awarded as follows: First = 10 points, Second = 9 points, Third = 8 points, Fourth = 7 points, Fifth = 6 points, Sixth = 5 points, Seventh = 4 points, Eighth = 3 points, Ninth = 2 points, Tenth = 1 point.
10. Should more than one swimmer finish on an equal number of points, then each member will receive a trophy.
 
HOW CAN A PARENT HELP?
Sydney Uni Sport Race night and SUSC Club Championships can only occur with parent assistance. Parents will be expected to assist in the setup/ clean up, time keeping etc.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
SUSC is run by a Management Committee which is elected at the Annual General meeting in September of each year. Any member or members’ representative is welcome to attend committee meetings and to have an input into the development of the annual club management plan and participate in the running of the Club. Management Committee meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6.00pm.

As an athlete/swimmer/parent member of the Sydney University Swimming Club I will participate and train in line with the following Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness code of conduct:

SWIMMING CLUB RULES
• Abide by the constitution of the Club
• SUSC Membership and NSW Swimming Registration run concurrently from October 1st – September 31st.
• All Club members must maintain current membership of Sydney University Sport. Membership is deemed suspended immediately Sydney Uni Sport Membership lapses.
• Club membership must be renewed each year.
• Club Membership is inclusive of compulsory registration with Swimming NSW. Two categories of Club Membership are offered: Athlete/Swimmer and Non-Swimmer. Refer Appendix D of Club Constitution.
• Individuals wishing to become members of the Club shall:
• Complete Sydney Uni Sport Club membership application forms,
• Have a Club committee representative sign off on all application forms
• Make appropriate payment including Sydney Uni Sport fee.
• The Club Executive on behalf of members must ensure that all policies and procedures, as set out in the Sydney University Sport Club Administration Handbook (as amended), are adhered to.
• All members and swimmer members of Sydney University Swimming Club must abide by the code of conduct as it appears in Appendix A of the Club constitution.
• The Sydney University Swimming Club supports all members as long as they have abided by the Club Rules as outlined in the Club Constitution and Appendix C.
• All members in signing the application for membership agrees to authorising Sydney University Club and NSW Swimming Inc. to use and disclose, to related bodies any personal information as may be necessary to implement the rules, regulations and policies in the Swimming Club Constitution and the Rules, Regulations and Policies as of NSW Swimming Association Inc, Australian Swimming Inc, the relevant District Swimming Association, including Australian Swimming’s Anti-doping, Member Protection and Privacy policies. • All members in signing the application for membership agrees to have their name, photograph and results published in official programs, newsletters and websites.
• Other Rules as may be made and approved by the committee and appended Appendix C of the Club constitution from time to time.
 
CARNIVAL AND SWIM MEETS
SUSC competes at various interclub, district, Metropolitan, State, National championships and encourages members to participate.
SUSC Coach /Race Secretary will inform members of upcoming carnivals and club meets. This information is also placed on the club noticeboard which is situated on pool deck.
The carnival will have a closing date and all entry cards and money must be placed in the club yellow box situated on pool deck by this date. Late entries will not be processed.
SUSC coach will indicate which meet/s is/are target meets, and members are encouraged to attend these particular carnivals.
SUSC would like all members to wear club caps and swimmers when representing SUSC in competitions, meets and carnivals. These can be purchased at the front counter of the Sports & Aquatic Centre.
 
HOW TO ENTER A CARNIVAL & COMPLETE A RACE ENTRY CARD:
Obtain entry cards from the noticeboard on pool deck. Fill out the multi-entry card and place the card and money into the yellow box by the closing date.
Late entries will not be processed.
 Complete one entry card per swimmer – Pink for female entries Blue for Male entries
 Please print CLEARLY using a pen. illegible or incomplete entries will not be accepted

 Swimming Club: name of club to which the swimmer is registered to compete

 Age: in years as indicated on the published information provided for the meet being entered
 ID No: Swimming NSW Registration Number (6 digits)

 Date of Meet: i.e. first day of the meet being entered
 Event Number: the number given to the event for which the swimmer wishes to enter; please list in event order
Stroke:  name the stroke to be swum; use the following abbreviations:
F/S  = Freestyle  IM  = Ind. Medley
B/K  = Backstroke  FLY  = Butterfly
B/S  = Breaststroke
 Distance: length of the event to be swum: 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m etc
 Entry time: BEST time swum by swimmer for this event; refer to the relevant qualifying periods; refer to constants if converting times; please indicate if a split time is being used. If you do not have a time please enter NT
 Achievement Date / Place: date on which entry time was achieved and the name of meet / pool where time was achieved.
 Total number of entries x entry fee = TOTAL money to be submitted with Entry Card.

A GUIDE TO COMPETING AS A SUSC MEMBER:
• Talk with your coach regarding which events to enter
• Talk with your coach regarding training attendance for the week prior to competition
The Day Prior To Competition- (Prepare and Pack)
• Confirm warm up time with coach
• Ensure that you have packed spare goggles, swim suits, towels, warm clothes/shoes, books ,games
• Organise food & drink. Low fat snacks are the best food to consume during competition day. (Fruit, crackers, sandwiches, rice, pasta). Water/sports drinks are important for hydration and energy top up.
Competition Day
• Work out your goals for the day
• It is essential you eat breakfast, try to consume your breakfast about two hours prior to warm up.
• Get to the pool early
• Check the events that you have entered with the program.
• Discuss with coach warm up and events you have entered
During The Competition
• Ensure you talk to your coach before and after each event.
• Know your events and ensure you are in marshalling on time for your event
• Check that you know where the marshalling board is.
• Pay attention in marshalling, it is your responsibility to be behind the blocks for your event.
• Ensure you swim down after each event- if no pool space available warm and cold showers are beneficial
• Stay focused throughout the day
• Ensure you stay warm, always wear clothes and shoes
• Rest/relax
• Support your team mates
• Stay hydrated- (drink water, sports drinks)
• Eat small amounts of food frequently- low in fat and protein
• If you want to drop an event please speak to your coach, not swimming events without your coach’s approval is not acceptable
Sit with Your Team Mates
SUSC encourages all swimmers to sit together. Look for the SUSC Banner or other swimmers wearing our Team clothing.
