Code of Conduct

Mission Statement
To provide a safe, secure and happy environment for swimmers, coaches, parents and staff where all swim school participants are respected and encouraged to perform to their potential. It is hoped that swimmers will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions and behaviours so they may reach their full swimming potential.
 
Codes of Conduct
Code of conduct: General Behaviour
As a person involved in the Sydney University Swim Program, the following standard of behaviour is expected whilst on the premises of Sydney University Sports and Aquatic Centre.
▪ Respect the rights, dignity and worth of fellow swim school members & coaches.
▪ Refrain from conduct which could be regarded as harassment, bullying, discrimination and abuse whether it is physical, mental, verbal or emotional.
▪ Refrain from behaviour that is disruptive to others.
▪ Be ethical, considerate, fair and honest in all dealings with others.
▪ Respect the talent, potential and development of fellow swim school members.
▪ Show concern and caution towards others that may be injured and sick.
▪ Be responsible in and accept responsibility for your actions
▪ Be a positive role model to other swimmers.
▪ Be open and honest with coaches concerning illness and injury and the ability to train fully within the program requirements.
▪ Behave myself in a professional manner relating to language, manner, temper and punctuality.
▪ Be honest in my attitude and preparation to training.
▪ Work equally hard for my team mates and myself.
▪ Comply with the training requirements of swimming as laid down by the coaches and to accept and respond in a positive manner to their constructive criticism.
 
Code of conduct: Parent
▪ Don’t pressure my child in any way – I know that this is their sport not mine.
▪ Abide by the General Behavioural Code of Conduct
▪ Encourage my child to play within the rules and respect officials’ and coaches’ decisions – no matter what.
▪ To teach my child to respect the efforts of their opponents.
▪ Applaud good performances by both my child’s team and their opponents.
▪ Provide positive comments that motivate and encourage continued effort.
▪ Focus on my child’s efforts and performance – not the score.
▪ To respect the coaches, officials and other volunteers who give their time to conduct the event for my child.
▪ Help when asked by a coach or official.
▪ Don’t criticise or ridicule my child’s performance after the sport.
▪ Don’t criticise coaching staff in front of others
▪ Don’t discuss problem with other parents, follow the complaints procedure.
▪ Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all people involved in the sport, regardless of their gender, ability or cultural background.
▪ Ensure my child is punctual and has necessary equipment and apparel.
▪ Communicate directly and immediately to coaches if any training sessions or competitions are to be missed by my child.
 
Code of conduct: Competitive Swimmers (Sydney Uni Swim Club Members)
▪ Follow the rules of Swimming Australia.
▪ Abide by the General Behaviour Code of Conduct.
▪ Never argue with an official. If I disagree with a decision I will inform the captain, coach or manager during a break or after the competition.
▪ Be a good sport and applaud all good performances whether they are made by my team or the opposition.
▪ Treat all swimmers in my sport as I like to be treated. I will not bully or take unfair advantage of another competitor.  I will not disrupt other swimmers.
▪ Cooperate with my coach, team mates and opponents.
▪ Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
▪ Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
▪ Thank the opposition and officials at the end of competitions.
▪ Comply with anti-doping policies.
▪ Be open and honest with my coach concerning illness and injury and my ability to train fully within the program requirements.
▪ Cooperate with coaches in the development of programs to adequately prepare me for competition at the highest level.
▪ Communicate directly and immediately to coaches if any training sessions  or competitions are to be missed.
 
Code of conduct: Administrator
• Abide by the General Behaviour Code of Conduct
• Act in good faith and in the best interests of the sport as a whole
• Maintain confidentially in regards to sensitive and/or commercial information.
• Resolve conflicts fairly and promptly through the established procedures.
• Do not allow prejudice, conflict of interest or bias to affect your objectivity.
 
Code of conduct: Official
• Abide by the General Behaviour Code of Conduct
• Be impartial, consistent, objective and courteous when making decisions.
• Accept responsibility for my actions and decisions.
• Be a positive role model in behaviour and personal appearance and ensure my comments are positive and supportive.
• Always respect, remain loyal to and support other officials.
• Maintain the required standard of accreditation and/or licensing of professional competencies.
• Give every participant a “fair go” regardless of their gender, ability, ethnicity, cultural background or religion.
• Have sound knowledge of Swimming Australia policies and rules.
 
Code of conduct: Coach
• Operate within the rules and spirit of the sport and teach my swimmers to do the same
• Abide by the General behaviour Code of Conduct
• Be responsible for matters concerning coaching, training and development of members
• Be reasonable in my demands on swimmers’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
• Help each swimmer reach their potential, respect the talent, developmental stage and goals of each person and compliment and encourage with positive support and feedback.
• Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of all swimmers.
• To display control, respect and professionalism to all involved with the sport including opponents, referees, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Encourage my swimmers to do the same.
• Obtain appropriate qualifications and keep up to date with the latest coaching practices and the principles of growth and development of young swimmers.
• To promote adherence to anti-doping policies.
• Ensure that any physical contact with others is appropriate to the situation and necessary for skill development.
• Have sound knowledge of Swimming Australia policies and rules.
 
Grievance & Complaints Procedure
A complaint can be made about an act, behaviour, omission, situation or decision that someone believes is a breach of the Code of Conduct.  A complaint can be received verbally or written.
If there is a failure to comply with the Code of Conduct by an individual, the following procedures need to be followed:
 
For breaches by the Swimmer:
1. Refer the matter to the Squad Coach.
2. If complainant not satisfied with the resolution then refer the matter to the Head Coach.
3. Swim School Head Coach to meet with Parent and discuss issue raised.  A solution or remedy will be agreed upon.
4. Head Coach to contact complainant and inform of action being taken.
5. If complainant not happy with resolution a meeting with complainant, Head Coach and SUS Management will be organised to review.
 
For breaches - Procedure for Coaches/Staff:
Should a swimmer fail to comply with the Code of Conduct, one or more of the following sanctions may be imposed by SU Sport
▪ Verbal or written warning.
▪ A direction that the individual make a verbal or written apology.
▪ Removal from the session with follow up meeting with parents, with the  expectation of resolution and continuation within the program.
▪ A demotion or transfer to another squad.
▪ A suspension from the swim school.
▪ An expulsion from the swim school.
When imposing any sanction, it should be accompanied by a warning that a similar breach of the code of conduct by that individual may result in the imposition of a more serious form of discipline.
 
Discipline Guide
1. Minor Breaches- will be handled by the coach on deck at the time of the incident and result in:
* coach reprimand
* timeout (5-10 minutes)
2. Serious or Excessive Breaches- following two breaches the swimmer will be asked to leave the session and a meeting will be held between SU Sport member, the individual and parent to discuss the individuals behaviour and their responsibility to assist in the remediation of that behaviour.
3. Major Breaches- will result in the demotion or transfer to another squad, suspension or expulsion of the individual from the swim school
Behaviours include:
* Violence against other swimmers, coaches, SU Sport staff.
* Persistent disobedience, harassment, intimidation and bullying
In instances outlined above SU Sport will work in partnership with parents to assist the individual overcome their behaviour and rejoin the swim school.
All breaches of the Code of Conduct will be recorded in the Swim School Code of Conduct book.
 
For breaches by the Administrator/Coach/Official
1. Contact the Administrator/Coach/Official.
2. If complainant not satisfied with the resolution then refer the matter to the Head Coach.
3. Swim School Head Coach to meet with Administrator and discuss issue raised.  A solution or remedy will be agreed upon.
4. Head Coach to contact complainant and inform of action being taken.
5. If complainant not happy with resolution a meeting with complainant, Head Coach and SUS Management will be organised to review.
